<p>On a recent July morning, InSight Crime investigators visited an ancient Mayan city located deep inside Guatemala’s Sierra Lacandón National Park along the border with Mexico. Upon approaching one of the monumental structures, a patch of bright red graffiti on one of the exterior walls looked out of place. It was a clear sign that not even these natural wonders were safe from the territorial control exercised by organized crime groups driving deforestation in this jungle region. </p>
